Saturday Kid Gym

Join us every week for Saturday Kid Gym at the Smith School. We divide the gym into a two areas-one for quieter activities and one side for physical activities like basketball, floor hockey, and more. The "quieter" side offers crafts, games, puzzles, an infant area and more.

The Easter Egg Hunt was a HUGE success! Over 110 kids (our highest number ever) searched for eggs at the Smith School. Then they turned in the eggs and received a goody bag.

Our Winter Festival was well attended and a success on all levels. Many people were able to skate on the rink and the icy crust on the snow made for a luge-like run from the baseball fields down to the old tennis court. Everyone enjoyed free food and drinks courtesy of our potluck. We thank everyone who volunteered their time or donated food/drinks. We would also like to thank Winterport Fire and Rescue for bringing an engine and ambulance for the kids to explore.

Town Manager Phil Pitula and I have continued our efforts to improve Abbott Park. We are in the second year of a serious push to get our ball fields in playing shape for the middle school baseball and softball teams. The school district, Little League and the town are creating a cooperative plan to upgrade and maintain the fields. It is great to see these groups getting together to make this happen.

The town has replaced/repaired fencing around the basketball courts and ball fields. I cleaned out fallen trees and weeds from the recreation trails. We also plan to replace two bridges on one of the trails. We also increased the maintenance schedule for the fields and park in general. The playground will be overhauled this Spring. Once these items are finished we will need no major work done in the near future and will only have to maintain the area. The area looks far better and we hope the residents enjoy the new look.

The recreation department is always looking for volunteers to help coach, run programs, clean and maintain fields and facilities, and strengthen the recreation department. Whatever your skill, time available, or interest, we can use your help! Volunteering can be a half hour of help once year, teaching a one-time or ongoing class, or a regular commitment. It's up to you and we welcome any help you offer.
